Bee watering station - the secret ingredient (maybe?)

Hello everyone,

I was researching the best ways to make your own butterfly and bee watering station when I came across a video of someone who used essential oil to entice the bees in. This may be obvious to some of you, but I had not even considered using something in the water to attract the bees. Previously when I put out a watering station, the water just got dirty and only a few bees landed to have a drink. In the future I would like to have a working water feature in the garden, that could also incorporate the bee water station, but for now I have made a really simple one to test out whether the essential oil will make a difference. I have used lavender essential oil, as it is the main one I have to hand.

My simple watering station for bees and butterflys.
A bee watering station can be as simple or as complicated as you want. This is a really simple way to make one. All I have done is put lots of rocks into a shallow dish, put that on an upturned pot for some height, then added water and a few drops of essential oil. Its that simple. You can go so far as to setup an automatic refilling station, as well as adding plants and moss to your dish or even having running water. I plan to try some other options in the future, but for now this will do. I will let you guys know if I get any bee action! There are about 3-4 bees at a time currently on the flower just next to where I have put the water, so fingers crossed.

A bee on a nearby plant (baby sage). The bees go mad for these beautiful red flowers.
